Civil Society in the Global Classroom

A Centropa Seminar for teachers in South Carolina 
and surrounding State 
in partnership with the SC Council on the Social Studies & the SC Council on the Holocaust
University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, 

This two and a half day seminar will provide participants with an expanded knowledge of 20th century European History, the Holocaust, and Civil Society in the global classroom, and instructional strategies to teach these topics.


Activities are aligned to the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate and the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards.

Participants will attend Friday evening services at a Columbia synagogue; learn how to use personal stories and photographs to teach history, civics, storytelling, global perspective, innovation, and critical thinking; discover the story of a Jewish family in Berlin, how they lived in the 1920, how they fled, where they survived and how they lived afterwards; investigate the parallels between Jim Crow and Nuremberg Laws; examine how people of different religious faiths can come together to form a better community; learn how to integrate a board game about the Cold War into the curriculum; and incorporate oral history from the 1930s detailing the rise of antisemitism to combat bullying today.

Participants will receive free educational materials and recertification points.
